8) The George Everest House

The foundation of the Survey of India was laid by Lieutenant Colonel George Everest in the British Army. In 1832, he founded it in Mussoorie’s Park Estate neighborhood of Hathipaon.
The Indian Great Trigonometrical Survey of India was its previous name. In the house and laboratory of Sir George Everest at Mussoorie, many high peaks of India were discovered and carved on the map between the years 1832 and 1843. George Everest House was built on 172 acres of land, and the laboratory located about 50 meters from it, was renovated by the state government some time ago.

It is also known as Park Estate. It is a historic building located on the road leading to Cloud End and is 6 km from the library bus stand. George Everest is located at a distance of only 7-8 kilometers from Mussoorie; the top of the peak can be reached by hiring a taxi from Mall Road or Gandhi Chowk to George Everest House. If you like walking, it will take you about 1.5 – 2 hours.

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, 51 km from Dehradun. First you can travel till there from your place, then to reach Dhanolti from there you can take bus or taxi. The nearest railway station is Dehradun.
After reaching there take a bus or taxi for Dhanolti. The distance from Dhanolti to Dehradun is about 37 km. Regular bus service is also available from other cities to this hilly place by road. There is no flight or rail facility available in Mussoorie, but the nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. The distance from the airport to Mussoorie is 59 km. If you want to reach Mussoorie from Mumbai or want to Mussoorie from Lucknow then you can catch a flight to Dehradun. The flight takes 2.30 hours to reach Dehradun from Mumbai. And from Dehradun to Mussoorie you can reach by bus.
You can also take your own taxi from Dehradun to Mussoorie, which would take you one to two hours, if you don’t want to ride the bus. By Train
The train ride is very comfortable. To go to Mussoorie, you first have to go to your nearest railway station. Before that one has to reach Dehradun railway station. To reach Mussoorie from Delhi you can catch the Shatabdi train which goes till Dehradun.
There is also a direct train service from Mumbai to Dehradun which runs via Bandra Terminus. The train takes 30-42 hours to reach Dehradun from Mumbai. Apart from this, there is a direct train from Jaipur to Mussoorie Uttaranchal Express which leaves Dehradun, but this train runs only on Saturdays. The nearest railway station to Mussoorie is Dehradun.
By Bus
The bus stand of Dehradun is located very near to the railway station. Buses are available to go to Mussoorie from 5 o’clock in the morning till 8 o’clock in the night. Express trains ply from cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Kanpur, Lucknow, Kolkata, so you can reach Dehradun easily.
Mussoorie can be reached only by road. For this you can go to Mussoorie by cab, private car or bus. From Dehradun and Delhi, there are frequent luxury buses operated by both commercial and state transportation companies. Regular buses also travel from different locations to Dehradun.
